In form Gold Coast City goalkeeper Ryan Meskell credits his own good performances to the work of his team-mates ahead of Friday’s clash with defending champions Redlands United.
This match has now been postponed by Football Queensland due to heavy rainfall in south-east Queensland. A new date will be advised once confirmed.
City travel to Cleveland Showgrounds looking to record their fifth straight PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues win when they face the Red Devils.
Meskell is in inspired form with his performances earning him consecutive team of the week appearances.
The City custodian kept a clean sheet against SWQ Thunder in round 4 and produced a string of superb saves as nine-man City saw off Brisbane Strikers last weekend.
Meskell said the good performances of his team-mates allowed him to shine in recent weeks.
“It comes from the whole team doing their job defensively, for me there’ve been weeks when I haven’t done too much and then there’ve been others where I’ve been called upon,” Meskell said.
“I’ve just got to do my best with every situation.”
“I’ve been lucky that the boys have dealt with most things before it even gets to me.”
Defending champions Redlands have started 2017 slowly, they sit 10th on the PS4 NPL Queensland ladder with just one win to their name after five rounds.
However, Meskell is under no illusions as to the threat Redlands will pose for his side.
“I know that they’re not getting the results that people probably would expect them to be getting, being the champions.”
“We’ve got to be ready for Redlands, we can’t take them lightly just because their results haven’t been good, they’ve obviously got quality, they’re the champions.”
In contrast to Redlands, 2nd placed City have been one of the competitions early frontrunners.
Meskell said he is delighted with his sides early momentum and credits his sides ticker as a key factor to their success.
“It’s really important to get off to a strong start, so you’re not playing catch up, its good that we’ve got the momentum early, we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing.”
“The boys are gelling together really well, I feel like we’ve got ability in the team but the thing that stands out the most is the ticker the boys are showing when games get tough,” Meskell concluded.
A win will again send City at least temporarily top of the PS4 NPL Queensland table as they continue their pursuit of Olympic FC.
