Gold Coast City midfielder Jayde Lowe said her side's hard work is starting to pay off following their 6-3 win over SWQ Thunder at Duncan Mckenna Field on Sunday.
Doubles from Jayde Lowe and Georgia Elliston were added to by goals from Emily Benton and Brie Bond to secure a second consecutive PS4 NPL Women’s Queensland win for City.
City took the lead in just the 2nd minute when Georgia Elliston broke free of the Thunder defence and smashed her effort into the top corner.
Thunder equalised just six minutes later when Louise Rolfe finished into an empty net after City goalkeeper Ellen Hepburn was only able to parry Sarah Sheridan’s initial shot.
City regained the lead in the 12th minute when Emily Benton chipped Thunder goalkeeper Elizabeth Hollitt after her first effort was saved.
Further goals to Georgia Elliston, Jayde Lowe & Brie Bond saw City gain a commanding lead, before Rosanna Berry pulled one back for the visitors sending sides into the break with the hosts leading 5-2.
Melanie Lloyd’s deflected strike 10 minutes after the restart gave the visitors some hope but Jayde Lowe’s driven effort from the top of the box in the 83rd minute sealed all three points for City.
Speaking post-match, Lowe said her side was beginning to reap the rewards for their hard work in training.
“I’m really happy with today’s performance, the score line shows it.”
“I’m happy with how the team keeps building each week, we just train hard and we’re starting to implement the stuff in training, it’s getting so much better,” Lowe said.
The win is City’s second on the trot following a 6-1 rout of Sunshine Coast in their last outing.
The result pushes City up to fifth on PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s Queensland ladder as they continue their pursuit of the top four.
Lowe said things were beginning to flow for her side who have notched up 12 goals in their last two games.
“I think that speaks for itself really, 12 goals is very, very impressive, I just think it’s all starting to flow a lot better, before everything seemed a little bit forced, we’re just starting to get the passes together and we’re getting the finishes so it’s great.”
City’s attention now turns to next week’s away trip to third placed Eastern Suburbs.
