Gold Coast City midfielder Jayde Lowe said her side's performance Sunday’s last ditch loss at the hands of The Gap speaks volumes of their quality.
A 91st minute Ruth Blackburn goal secured a 2-1 victory for the visitors in the PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s clash at Duncan Mckenna Field.
City went behind early when Gap forward Ruth Blackburn finished a one on one past goalkeeper Ellen Hepburn in the 18th minute.
After defending for long periods early on City clawed their way back into the match and were rewarded in the 71st minute when Jayde Lowe’s looping header found its way into the top corner, levelling the scores at one apiece.
However, it wasn’t to be for City as Blackburn popped up again in the 91st minute to slam home a winner for the defending champions.
Speaking post match, Lowe said the performance against the defending champions was indicative of her side's quality.
“We did super well as a team, to hold out a team as high calibre as The Gap is impressive.”
“We were finding our way a little bit in the first half but the girls came out in the second half and played the full 45, we gave it everything.”
“It speaks in volumes of the quality of our side, I think the sky’s the limit for this team,” Lowe said.
The result leaves City in 8th position on the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Women’s table, without a win to their name.
Lowe said the tough start has said her side will benefit from a tough start but believes they must learn to finish off their chances.
“It’s a tough way to start playing teams of such high calibre but it’s a good way to start, because we’ve got an idea of where we need to be and what we need to do as a team.”
“I’m super excited to see how we can work more as a team and get more creative in the front third and hopefully be more clinical.”
“I think that’s what we need to work on, we’re starting to get the combinations, once we get clinical in the box who knows what we can do,” Lowe concluded.
City now turn their attention to next weekend’s away trip to Sunshine Coast Fire.
