Gold Coast City defender Matthew Schmidt said his side's ability to create chances made the difference in Saturday night’s 2-0 win against Northern Fury at Townsville Sports Reserve.
A second half double from City forward Jarrod Kyle secured all three points for the visitors, sending them back to the top of the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland table.
After a tight first half City came out firing in the second stanza and were rewarded in the 63rd minute when Kyle smashed home the opener from inside the box.
City sealed the result in the 81st minute when Kyle guided the ball into the bottom right corner of the net from the top of the box following some slick play down the left.
Speaking post-match, Schmidt said he was pleased with his side’s output at both ends of the pitch.
“It was good to see out the match with a 2-0 win, I thought the boys fought quite well for that.”
“All in all I thought it was a great defensive effort but we’re not going to win games without scoring goals.”
“The fact that we created so many chances is promising, we put two away and killed the game, it could’ve been more but that’s football,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt spoke highly of the influence of match winner Kyle and defender Eoghan Murphy who both returned from suspension to line up against Fury.
“It was excellent to have Jarrod and Eoghan back, both are absolute stalwarts upfront and in the back,” Schmidt said.
“Jarrod always puts in a good shift both up front and defensively and it’s good to have Eoghan in the back there to intimidate other teams.”
The win sees City return to the summit of the PS4 NPL Queensland ladder as they continue to battle with Brisbane Olympic who have a game in hand for top spot.
Schmidt said his side collecting three points away at third placed Fury means the pressure is now with Olympic
“With it being neck and neck with Olympic at the moment, it’s good to take that win away and stick it to them and say now it’s your turn.”
“It’s good to be on top of the ladder but we’re just taking it week by week at the moment.”
City now enjoy a week off over the Easter break before travelling to AJ Kelly Park where they will face Brisbane Roar Youth.
