Assistant Coach Brett Budwee says Gold Coast City are confident but will not underestimate Gold Coast Knights in their opening Westfield FFA Cup tie on Saturday night
City host the Gold Coast Premier League outfit in Preliminary Round 5 of the national knock-out competition after Knights emerged as the last local club standing in the qualifying pathway.
As coach, Budwee guided Knights to promotion to the third-tier last year after topping Coast League One – providing City additional insight into their opponents.
He said he is well aware Knights are eyeing a ‘cupset’ against the higher-tiered City and the local bragging rights that come with being the last Gold Coast club remaining in the competition.
“They’ll be well supported and it should be a good atmosphere for the match,” Budwee said of his former club.
“They’re stacked with ex-NPL and a couple of ex-A-league players so I expect them to be of high quality.”
Knights boast former Gold Coast United duo Andrew Barisic and Chris Broadfoot, in addition to ex-Gold Coast City players Daniel Dragicevic and Daniel Grzic in their squad.
Budwee added, “I think it will be a physical game, they’ll try and take it to us. But week-in-week-out we’re playing against quality opposition, so it shouldn’t be too unfamiliar for us,” Budwee added.
He also identified the importance of not switching off at any point during the do-or-die cup contest.
“We’ve got to play for the full 90 minutes,” Budwee explained.
“We train more than these guys and we play at a higher standard. I think if we can just keep to our game plan and keep our work ethic up then we should come out on top.”
City are expected to name a full-strength squad for the match.
The winner of the match will advance to face Toowoomba-based PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland side SWQ Thunder in the next round, who City defeated 2-0 in their league meeting in March.
The winner from that game will then battle the victor of the Caloundra FC and Brothers Aston Villa tie for a place in the national Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.
