Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick was pleased with the commanding nature of his team’s performance as they swept aside Sunshine Coast FC 4-0 on Sunday.
Goals from Sam Smith, Jarrod Kyle, Lochlan Reus and Benjamin Lyvidikos secured the emphatic result which moves City into third position on the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Queensland table.
In form striker Smith opened the scoring for City inside ten minutes when he slammed home Kyle’s cutback from the top of the box.
Kyle got in on the act himself shortly after when he added a second from close range, before Reus effectively sealed the result barely a minute later when his driven shot from outside the penalty area extended the lead to three goals.
Substitute Lyvidikos iced the result midway through the second half with a well-placed strike from the edge of the area.
Speaking post-match, Piddick said he was impressed with his side's performance in hot conditions.
“It was a pretty commanding performance today,” Piddick said.
“It’s always good as a coach when you’re fairly comfortable 25-30 minutes into a game thinking you’ve probably got the win already.”
“The one thing I wanted to stress with the players particularly in the these conditions, you never know if you’ll fall in a heap in the second half so we had to keep pushing and I thought we did that well."
Despite the dominate performance, the result was dampened by a second half injury to influential midfielder Reus.
“He’s gone to hospital, at worst its bad ligaments but the foot didn’t look that great, it could be a broken ankle,” Piddick said.
“He’s an important player as well, so it’s disappointing for us, hopefully it’s not too bad.”
The result marks City's second consecutive win and first clean sheet of the 2017 league campaign.
Piddick said he is pleased with his sides progress so far this season.
“I think we’ve got a good team, there are a few new players so it’s about gelling as a team as well,” he said.
“I’m expecting as long as we keep improving and keep learning, to be there or there abouts within the top four.”
“If we keep winning who knows how high we can be,” Piddick concluded.
City’s attention now turns to next weekend’s home clash against SWQ Thunder, who are winless in their opening three matches of the season.
