Gold Coast City Women fullback Neesa Doyle says she and her teammates are eyeing a winning start to their PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s 2017 campaign this weekend.
City will line-up against UQFC in the season opener at A.J.Kelly Park on Sunday as they seek to improve on last season’s seventh place finish.
The match is one of five at the Redcliffe venue – with the opening round of the competition serving as the climax to Football Queensland’s Female Football Week promotions.
Doyle said the full complement of matches will provide an important insight into their future opponents this season.
“We all have plans to stick around after our game and watch the other teams. It will be good to find out more about them,” Doyle explained.
“But, of course, there is always the downside that they will also be able to watch us and identify our strengths and weaknesses.”
Last season, City only managed a single point in their two meetings against UQFC and Doyle said it was important to get a better return this year.
“Our aim is to make the top four this year, so important to get the three points in the first match,” she said.
She added, “Last year when we played UQFC I thought we were always the better team, but we just didn’t come away with the results.”
Doyle is one of several players returning for City from last year’s squad, along with captain Jamilla Riley, defender Joy Forsyth and attacker Steph Foreman.
However, Doyle cited new signings Teleya Reynolds, pacey winger Brie Bond and midfielder Emily Anderson as being important additions as the team aims for a return to finals football in September.
“I think we are well-placed for the year ahead, but we do have a few new girls in the team. So at the moment we are working on gelling together,” she said.
“We are just trying to find our style of play and build on last year,” she concluded.
