Gold Coast City midfielder Courtney Black says her side is looking to build momentum with a win against UQFC on Sunday.
City host UQFC at Duncan Mckenna Field in a match that marks the start of the second half of the PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s Queensland season.
The match shapes up as important one for both sides chances of securing a finals position come season end.
7th placed City who have a game in hand currently sit on nine points while 5th placed UQFC have 15 points to their name and sit one point outside of the top four.
City defender Black said a win on Sunday is vital for her sides finals aspirations.
“The game this weekend is vitally important because we're not currently in a spot to be making finals, we need to be winning as many games as we can,” Black said.
“We’re pretty confident, we’ve been training a lot on our combinations and we’ve been working on hard on our weaknesses, so hopefully in the 2nd half of the season we can implement that into our game.”
City have already met UQFC once this season, when UQFC secured a come-from-behind 2-1 win on the opening day of the season.
While Black is aware of the quality that UQFC possess she says her side must focus on their own game.
“They’ve always been a quality side, I’m expecting a really tough contest, last time we played them they had a really good offensive midfield, I’m expecting a lot of both technical play.”
“We need to focus on playing our own game with our combination play, work as a team and implement things we’ve been doing at training especially because we’ve got a few new technically gifted players, that will make it difficult for them.”
City returned to winning ways last weekend with a 1-0 victory at home over Western Pride, keeping their first clean sheet of the season in the process.
Black highlighted the importance of keeping the momentum going from last week’s win and lauded her sides defensive stability.
“The fact that we got the win has made us work harder at training, we’ve picked up the intensity a lot this week.”
“We are pretty confident going into this week’s game, momentum will only come off what we believe in.”
“We’ve been working on staying tight and talking, communicating because we’ve got a solid defensive line, I think getting that clean sheet gave us more motivation hopefully we can continue that,” Black concluded.
