Gold Coast City Women striker Brie Bond says she and her teammates are ready to take the game to league-leaders The Gap FC on Sunday night.
Long considered a powerhouse of the Queensland women’s football, the Gators have surrendered just one point to City in three previous matches at their Walton Bridge Reserve home ground.
However, with City coming off a win in their last hit-out against Western Pride, Bond said the team is going into the contest with a positive mind-set.
“Those sorts of records don’t worry us,” Bond stated.
“We will turn up and do the best we can. We know they are one of the top two teams in the league but that doesn’t mean that we are going to give up before we get there.”
City’s preparations for the clash have been dealt a blow by wet weather in recent days, with their scheduled match against UQFC postponed last weekend and training also interrupted.
Bond said despite the setbacks – and her side sitting ten points off fourth place in mid-table – the team are not yet prepared to write off their chances of finals football.
“I’m still confident, but it is up to the team to fight for that spot and work hard towards it,” Bond said.
“We are effectively half-way through the season but we will see what happens over the next couple of games and what sort of performances we can put in.”
To that end, the team is boosted by the recent addition of midfielder Jade Horcicka and fullback Jess Austin, who rejoin the club following stints in the United States college system.
Bond said she was excited by the role Horcicka can play in the team’s midfield.
“Jade joined up with us a couple of weeks ago at training and she has already added quite a bit of value – she has great leadership skills.”
“It’s a big boost because she is a great communicator and that experience she gained in America will help us,” she concluded.
City only narrowly missed out on their first ever win against the Gators in their meeting earlier this year on the Gold Coast, where the visitors stole the points with an injury time winner.
