Gold Coast City goalkeeper Matt Stein says his side lacked the finishing touch required to get three points in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Moreton Bay United.
City earned a point courtesy of a second half Sam Smith header against a Jets side reduced to ten men at Duncan Mckenna Field.
Jets took the lead a quarter hour into the contest when Riley Campbell converted from a set piece.
However, Jets were reduced to 10 men just minutes into the second half when Stephen Green was dismissed for a challenge on City defender Jaiden Walker, who was cleared of a suspected fracture post match.
Despite creating several chances City were unable to edge ahead in the final half hour of the contest and were forced to settle for a point.
The point marks twelve straight matches without defeat for City in all competition’s and maintains their position atop the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland standings.
Speaking post-match, Stein said his teammates were disappointed not to have collected all three points.
“It doesn’t matter if we’re playing Moreton Bay or Barcelona we expect to pick up the three points - we need to put in everything we’ve got,” Stein stated.
“Credit to Moreton Bay they scrapped when they had to - there were a couple cleared off the line that on another day might go in and we take the win.”
He added that his side lacked the finishing touch required to get the win.
“The boys dug in and we gave everything we could but coming into the change room we felt like it was two points dropped rather than a point gained,” Stein explained.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the just rewards for all the hard work we were putting in.”
“Everyone gave their all but when we get those kind of opportunities we need to finish them.”
City now turn their attention to the second half of the season as they push for their first Premiership title since 2014.
Next weekend they host FNQ Heat, who were the only team to defeat City in the opening eleven rounds of the home-and-away season.
Stein said he and his teammates are eager to make amends for their opening round 3-2 defeat in Cairns.
“We’re not settling for anything less than win now days,” Stein said, “We’re on top of the table for a reason.”
