Gold Coast City winger Benjamin Lyvidikos said his sides fighting spirit shone through in Saturday’s 9-0 win over Sunshine Coast Fire at Duncan Mckenna Field.
Four goals from Sam Smith and two from Lyvidikos were added to by strikes from Austin Ludwik, Nik Mirkovic and Tom Miller to seal an emphatic win for the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Queensland leaders.
It took City just two minutes to take the lead when striker Sam Smith broke free of the Fire defence and calmly finished past Fire keeper Kevin Downes.
Smith then grabbed his second of the night in the 22nd minute when he turned his man and slammed his effort home from the top of the box.
Smith wrapped up his hat trick in the 37th minute when he tapped home substitute Benjamin Lyvidikos’ cross at the back post just moments after Lyvidikos replaced injured Rhys Saunders.
Smith returned the favour just five minutes later when he squared the ball to Lyvidikos who blasted home from a close angle to send the hosts in 4-0 up at the break.
The scoring continued in the second half as defender Austin Ludwik rose above the pack at the back post to head home City’s fifth after Downes was unable to deal with Eoghan Murphy’s initial effort.
Lyvidikos then grabbed his second of the match as he slammed home from inside the area in the 60th minute.
Eight minutes later Smith scored his fourth of the night bundling home a Lyvidikos cross.
Nik Mirkovic got in on the act in the 83rd minute when he finished a one on one past Kevin Downes in the Fire net.
Debutant Tom Miller completed the scoring in stoppage time when he rounded Kevin Downes and rolled the ball home from a tight angle to seal a 9-0 score line for the hosts.
Speaking post-match, Lyvidikos said the performance speaks volumes about his sides character.
“Tonight shows that we’re always down to fight, to scrap for a game and continue to fight until the very end, it shows a bit about us as a unit as well.”
“We knew we couldn’t get complacent, we stuck to everything, we could’ve had at least 15 I reckon, I could’ve had five myself.”
“We did well to get our goal average up and we stuck to our structure which is good,” Lyvidikos said.
The win sends City five points clear at the top of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Queensland ladder following 2nd placed Brisbane Strikers draw with FNQ Heat at Perry Park.
Lyvidikos said his team is purely focused on their own results.
“It’s tight at the top of the table, Grae’s been telling us that we’ve just got to keep winning and winning and winning and that the rest will fall into place.”
“Having our rivals drop some points is always nice, we’ve just got to make sure we keep on winning.”
City’s attention now turns to next weekend’s away clash with SWQ Thunder.
