Gold Coast City midfielder Nik Mirkovic said his side stuck to the plan in their comprehensive 5-1 victory over Far North Queensland Heat at Sports Super Centre on Saturday.
Two goals from forward Jarrod Kyle was added to by strikes from Riley Dillon, Matthew Schmidt and an own goal to seal the result for the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland ladder leaders.
Kyle opened the scoring for City in the 11th minute when he deftly finished a lethal Riley Dillon cross.
Dillon then got in one the act himself breaking away down the right flank before sending the ball into the area and finishing the resulting goalmouth scramble himself to put City 2-0 up at the break.
Just three minutes into the second half Heat pulled one back as striker Jamie Carroll rose above the defence and headed powerfully past Matt Stein in the City goal.
City restored their two-goal advantage in the 65th minute when Jarrod Kyle headed home a Nik Mirkovic cross.
Left back Matthew Schmidt added to the scoring when he strode forward in the 75th minute skipping past several opponents before blasting past the ball past Heat keeper Kevin Ward.
City rounded out the 5-1 win in stoppage when Heat defender Josh Jennison turned Benjamin Lyvidikos’ cross into his own net.
Speaking post-match, City midfielder Nik Mirkovic said his side produced a thoroughly professional performance to earn the three points.
“It was a good result, 5-1 at home against Cairns, obviously they are the only team to beat us this season, to beat them 5-1 here was good,” Mirkovic said.
“We feel we’re the better side, we stuck to our game plan and I think the result shows that which is good.”
The win restores City’s three-point lead at the top of the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland ladder following Brisbane Strikers draw against Western Pride at Perry Park.
Mirkovic was delighted with the commitment shown by his teammates in Saturday’s contest.
“I think we had a good performance last week against Moreton Bay last and it was disappointing not to get the result,” Mirkovic said.
“We knew we had to come here to Runaway Bay, we hadn’t played here in a while against a team that we haven’t beaten in our last two outings.”
“Everyone was up for it, everyone was ready and everyone was willing to put in and get the result.”
City now turn their attention to next week’s away clash with Brisbane City at Corporate Travel Management Stadium.
