Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick said his sides ability to do the little things well made the difference against Brisbane City at the Sports Super Centre on Saturday night.
Goals from Sam Smith and Riley Dillon secured a 2-1 victory for the hosts - their first of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues season.
Smith opened the scoring in his first competitive start for the club, pouncing to finish past Bon Scott who could only parry Lochlan Reus’ initial effort prior to the half hour.
Smith also played a telling hand in Gold Coast City's second early in the second half.
The English striker produced a driving run to beat two defenders before squaring to Riley Dillon near the penalty spot, who calmly finished.
The visitors pulled a goal back in the final stages through a header from Carter Glockner, but despite a late charge were unable to again get the better of the Gold Coast City back four.
Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick said his side bounced back well from the disappointment of last weekend's opening round defeat in Cairns.
“You could see it meant a lot to both teams, so it was important to get three points tonight,” Piddick explained.
“It was one of those games where the little things made the difference and we did those well tonight.”
“We defended set pieces far better than what we did last week.”
“I know we’re going to score goals, so if we don’t let any easy ones in then we’re always a chance," he concluded.
Match-winner Riley Dillon spoke glowingly of the team's work rate and heaped praise on forwards Sam Smith and Jarrod Kyle.
“We worked hard together right to end and stuck to it. Sammy Smith and Jarrod Kyle, they’re big tall players, lots of threat in the air as well.”
“As long as my deliveries are good we can score a lot of goals this year,” he concluded.
Gold Coast City’s attention now turns to next weekend's away clash with Sunshine Coast FC.
