Gold Coast City goalkeeper Matt Stein said his side's resilience shone through in Saturday night’s 3-2 win over Redlands United at Duncan Mckenna Field.
City maintained their spot at the top of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Queensland ladder thanks to goals from Sam Smith, Jarrod Kyle and Roman Hofmann.
Golden boot leader Smith opened the scoring for City early when he rose above the pack and headed past Redlands keeper James Edgar for his 18th goal in the league this year.
City doubled their lead when Kyle bundled the ball home at the back post after after Benjamin Lyvidikos’ initial effort was parried. The goal was Kyle's tenth of the league campaign.
Hofmann then effectively sealed the points just minutes later when he curled the ball into the back of the net from the top of the box.
Redlands grabbed a lifeline in first half stoppage time when Stein misjudged Graham Fyfe’s free kick.
City then survived a nervy conclusion after Stuart Edgar headed home the visitors' second with just minutes remaining.
Speaking post-match, Stein said his side's resilient attitude had proved decisive.
“We were under the pump a bit. We knew what they were going to do for the last 15 minutes, but as a group we’re all pretty close and we all backed each other up and got the result.”
“It's not the performance that we were looking for but the most important thing is that we had six games to go this season, we had to win them all and that’s one ticked off tonight.”
The win maintains City’s two-point advantage over nearest rivals Brisbane Strikers at the top of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Queensland ladder.
Stein described the win as crucial as the race for the Premiership - and a spot in the national Finals Series - heats up.
“Tonight’s win was massive. We couldn’t lose or drop points tonight knowing that Strikers will likely win their game. It would’ve left us playing catch up,” Stein said
“There’s a big contrast between teams like Strikers and Redlands but everyone that plays us from here on out is going to battle hard against us so we’ve just got to grit it out and get the results,” he concluded.
City’s focus now turns to next weekend’s home clash with Northern Fury.
