Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick was pleased with the way his side defended in their 2-0 victory over South West Queensland Thunder on Saturday night.
Goals from Sam Smith and Riley Dillon handed City a third consecutive PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues victory at Sports Super Centre.
Sam Smith opened the scoring in the 29th minute when he controlled Justyn Mckay’s lofted pass on his chest before expertly slamming the ball into the bottom corner from the top of the box.
Riley Dillon sealed the result in the 87th minute, tapping home after SWQ keeper Anthony Passante could only parry Jarrod Kyle’s initial effort.
Speaking post-match, Piddick was relieved to come away with all three points.
“It was good to get a win,” Piddick said.
“They came into it a bit in the second half, it was a little bit nervous, so it was good to get that second towards the end just to kill the game off.”
The win resulted in City’s second consecutive clean sheet of the PS4 NPL season.
Piddick said he was pleased with the way his side defended and its importance to his side’s overall success.
“We had a lot of possession, particularly in the first half and when you don’t take your chances you’ve got to make sure you don’t give anyone anything at the other end.”
“We did that well today, they had couple of speculative shots but they didn’t really have genuine chances to score which was pleasing.”
“I know we can score goals, so if we work hard to make sure we don’t give away easy goals we’ll go a long way this year,” Piddick concluded.
The result elevates City to 2nd on the PS4 NPL Queensland table, with goal difference the only thing separating them from league leaders Olympic FC.
City are at home again next weekend when they host reigning premiers Brisbane Strikers at Sports Super Centre.
