Gold Coast City midfielder Riley Thompson-King said his sides mentality gave them the edge in a 3-0 win over a physical Peninsula Power side on Saturday night.
Goals from Ethan Grimley, Ben Williams and Fraser Eller secured the three points for City in their second game of the Macron Cup pre-season tournament at AJ Kelly Park.
Ethan Grimley gave City an early lead just three minutes into the contest as his deflected strike from the edge of the area found its way into the back of the net.
Ben Williams doubled the advantage before half time as he pounced on a loose ball to finish into the empty net after Power keeper Jake Reesby could only parry Riley Thompson-King’s initial effort.
Fraser Eller sealed the result, converting a penalty just after the hour after Ethan Grimley was brought down inside the area in an incident that resulted in Power midfielder Paul Swithenbank receiving his marching orders for a second yellow card.
City midfielder Riley Thompson-King said despite being physically beaten by their opponents his side held strong throughout the 90 minutes.
“Physically we were beaten, but mentally our attitude from the first whistle all throughout the 90. That was good. We beat them in that aspect,” Thompson-King said.
The win sees City sitting second ahead of the last round of group matches in the tournament.
Thompson-King expects more of the same from his side in next weeks match.
“We’ll go back to the training fields, work hard-graft and we’ll bring the same attitude, same mentality and intensity to next weeks game.”
A win in the final group match against last placed Brisbane City is likely to be enough for Gold Coast City to progress to the final of the Macron Cup, however the result between first placed Olympic FC and third placed Peninsula Power will also have a bearing on the final standings.
